Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. has some fantastic Civil War monuments. Here in this section I have selected only but a few, however when visiting the Capitol Building I was delighted that my visit coincided with a special service.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy organised an excellent service.

Civil War monuments, The Capitol Mall, Washington D.C.

The monument was created by sculptor Henry Merwin Shardy, who spent 20 years of his life working on it. It is divided into three sections. The tall middle section depicts Grant aboard his horse Cincinnati, he is flanked, on either side, by fighting Union Artillery and Cavalry groups. Construction began in 1909 and the memorial dedicated on the 100th. anniversary of Grant`s birth, 27th. April 1922. 

This superb monument to General Meade gives the impression of the brave soldier surrounded by supporters and crowned with the laurel wreaths of victory. 

The inscription beneath reads, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to Major General George Gordon Meade who commanded the Union Forces at Gettysburg.

Major General J.E.B. Stuart`s Pistol, 1863.

Confederate Major General J.E.B. Stuart received this English made Tranter revolver from Major Heros Von Borcke, a Prussian Officer who served as Stuart`s Chief of Staff. The revolver is presently on display in the Smithsonian Museum while the Museum of American History is being renovated.

Brigadier Gereral Albert Pike, C.S.A.

Albert Pike`s staute stands in Judiciary Square, Washington and was erected by The Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction. The figure seated holds The Supreme Council Banner. 

On 22nd. Nov. 1861 Albert Pike was appointed as Brigadier General and Indian Commissioner for the Confederacy. He led a Brigade of Cherokee Indians at the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862, however the conduct of the Brigade was at least questionable and he resigned his Commission on 19th. Nov. 1862. 

Albert Pike was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 2 in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1850. He was Elected as Grand Commander of The Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction on 3rd. Jan. 1859, a position he held for 32 years.

When The Provincial Grand Lodge of The Royal Order of Scotland was instituted on 4th. Oct. 1877 , Albert Pike was appointed as The Provincial Grand Master of America.  

Ford`s Theatre. On 14th. April 1865 John Wilkes Booth, a Southern sympathiser, assassinated President Abraham Lincoln here as he attended a performance of Our American Cousin. Booth entered the State Box and shot the President in the back of the head at point blank range. He made his escape only to be shot at Garrett`s Farm near Port Royal, Virginia on 26th. April. 

Petersen House. President Lincoln was taken to the Petersen House across the road from the Theatre. He never regained consciousness and passed away on the morning of April 15th. 1865.
